Mrs Yeoman’s Scone Recipe



250g SR flour

1 teaspoon sugar

Pinch of salt

50g butter

150ml milk

2oz grated cheese or 2oz dried fruit


  1. Preheat oven to gas 7 or 200C
  2. Mix flour, sugar and salt
  3. Add butter in small pieces
  4. Rub butter into flour so that it looks like breadcrumbs
  5. Add fruit/cheese
  6. Add enough milk to bring dough together
  7. Using your hands shape dough into a disc 1 inch or 2.5cm thick
  8. Cut into 6 pizza style or use a cutter
  9. Brush tops with milk to glaze
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes until nicely golden


  • Scones are fairly healthy – much less fat and sugar than cupcakes
  • Scones are cheap to make – a batch costs approximately 30p
